"Custer Passes Through Monroe" February 17, 1876
(Monroe Commercial, February 17, 1876; p.1, c.1)
General Custer passed through Monroe last Saturday en route for his command at Fort Abraham Lincoln, Dakota Territory. He stopped over only one train. The threats of the Indians to go on the war path as soon as spring opens, makes it necessary for the army on the frontier to take the initiative, and give them a little foretaste before they get prepared for it. The General's GALAXY articles, to form his forthcoming book, we are assured will not be delayed by his unexpected call to the frontier.
