HEAVY LOSS FROM FIRE

(Monroe Democrat, May 10, 1907, p.1, c.1)

Fire destroyed Hon. John Strong's grain elevator and 150 barrel flour mill in South Rockwood early on Sunday morning. The elevator contained over 500 bushels of wheat, 3,000 of oats and 700 or corn. A freight car, which stood on the side track near the elevator was also burned. 1,000 bushels of wheat having been unloaded from it on Saturday. The buildings cost about ..thirteen years ago and could not replaced now for less than $5,000. The value of the grain, $12,500 brings the total loss to about $30,000. The building was insured for $10,000 and contents for $7,500, Mr. Strong carrying comparatively small insurance as that the ...ties are oppressively high, in the collage.

The fire was caused by a hot box in a corner on Saturday afternoon, which made it necessary to shut down the mill. The miller and Mr. Strong worked at it and thought they had recovered every vestige of fire. Mr. Strong, after finishing his work at his store that night, intended to stay at the mill and watch, but was told by his son that the miller had promised to watch. The latter failed to do so and at 3:00 Sunday morning the mill was discovered to be on fire, the flames having already made a tremendous headway. The only method of fighting it was to organize a bucket brigade and use the steam pump in connection with the mill, which throws two streams, mill and elevator, the latter a frame building. Were seen to be hopelessly lost and all the efforts were directed toward saving the surrounding buildings.

Mr. Strong's lumber yards, store and a number of other buildings are within a stone's throw and each of them caught fire several times. The mill was of brick and had a cupola and ventilating shaft in the center.
