Bygones of Monroe:

From The Fourth Regiment

A letter from Geo. W. Owen of Co. A, 4th Michigan who enlisted from this office, dated Harrison’s Landing, July 28th, says:  “The health of the Regiment is now very good.  The number of those that have been going to the Surgeon every morning for excuses and medicines is gradually diminishing.  There are but 13 in our Regimental hospital now, and they are improving quite fast.  The hospital department is in excellent condition at present; have a large new tent for the sick, and three rows of bunks built from the ground and new mattresses for the sick to lie on.  The hospital department is now in charge of Surgeon M.L. Mead of Albany, N.Y., and our worthy hospital Steward, M.W. Hall, of Monroe.  Surgeon Mead has been with the Regiment but a little over a week, and is generally liked I believe.  Among those in the hospital is Samuel Kidder and Edward Woodard.  They are both improving.  We do not know how those of Co. A are getting along that were taken to hospitals north.  Their names are Corporal Geo. D. Paul, Chas. E. Bisbee, and Geo. M. Whipple.  Their wounds were not very serious and not doubt they are getting along well.”
