MUSKRAT- MARSH BEEF

(MONROE DEMOCRAT AUGUST 4, 1891)

Last Friday for the first time in the history of Monroe a denizen of the marsh went about our streets with a wheelbarrow load "marsh beef" better know as dressed muskrat, seeking customers. It is probably useless to remark that he did not have to hunt very long. His one wheeled vehicle was soon surrounded and the demand became so great that he thought it wise to raise the price per carcass. Perhaps the party engaged is this new enterprise is not aware that there is a three dollar fine for every rat killed and a fine of five dollars for every house destroyed. At this season the rats are tender, fat and flavored.
