U.S. 23 was an interesting road also. Its route changed at least 2 times from the original. The original layout followed roads such as Lewis Ave. through Temperance and Ida, over the River Raisin Bridge at Grape; then West on North Custer to Ida Maybee Road; then North on Palmer Road to the county line. Another later route was Lewis Ave. through Temperance and Ida North to M-50, South Custer Road. It turned West and followed South Custer Rd. into Dundee, then North along then Carpenter Road, now Ann Arbor Rd., to the county line. The current U.S. 23 was laid out along a new route, with the exception of a short stretch between the Ann Arbor Rail Road track overpass North to the city of Milan. The Southbound lane is the original U.S. 23 route.
