Bygones of Monroe:
VESSELS PASSING MONROE LIGHT
(Monroe Commercial, January 6, 1870, p3c1)
The number of vessels of all classes that passed in sight of Monroe Light House , during the season of navigation for the year 1869, was 3,760; being an increase, over 1868, of 687, and over 1863 of 1,926. Of the number passing in 1869, 449 were lumber barges, carrying a half million feet each, and making two hundred and twenty four million feet of lumber. But this is not all the lumber, as many other vessels were also laden with lumber. These vessels, it must also be remembered are only those passing by daylight. These facts are furnished us by Mr. J. Noble, the keeper of the Light House.
