National Sex Offender Public Website

(NSOPW) National Sex Offender Public Website

According to its website, The NSOPW is the only U.S. Government Website that links public state, territorial, and tribal sex offender registries into one national search site where concerned residents, parents, and employers can search and identify location information on sex offenders residing, working and attending school in nearby neighborhoods. It is provided by the United States Department of Justice, managed by the Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART), and authorized by the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA).

Users of the website can search by name, address, zip code, state/county, or city/town.

NSOPW also provides users with educational information about sexual abuse topics and how to protect themselves and loved ones from becoming victims.

Michigan’s PSOR (Public Sex Offender Registry) is linked to the national website, and provides a photo of the offender, last known address, date of last address verification, and information about the offense.

What about criminal offenders in general?
There is no free national site, but most states offer an offender search site. Search the internet using the query "offender search" with the state of interest and choose the state's government site from the list of results.

In Michigan, visit the free Offender Tracking Information System (OTIS) via the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC). Users of the site can search by name and narrow by race, gender, age, and other fields, to find information on both felons and misdemeanants. Results display a photo of the offender, information about the offense, sentence, and supervision conditions, as well as a link to the MCL (Michigan Compiled Laws) number related to the crime. Only offenders under jurisdiction/supervision of the MDOC within the last three years will appear.

In Ohio, visit the state's Department of Rehabilitation and Correction's Offender Search. Users of the site can search by name, county of commitment, county of residence, and more. Offenders included on the site will be currently incarcerated in an Ohio Prison, currently under Department supervision, judicially released, or dead of natural causes while incarcerated. Results will display a photo of the offender, an offender number, date of birth, status and offense.

The Monroe County Library System can help. Visit the online catalog to search for books, government documents, dvds or other items on the subject, or contact a librarian using the Ask A Librarian form.
