Class Descriptions

Access(ing) a Database (Microsoft Access)
We will develop an understanding of the tools of Microsoft Access and create a simple database. Prerequisite: Knowledge of word processing and mouse skills. Class size is limited. Registration is required.


Computer Basics (6 Weeks)
This class is designed to work with the specific requests of participants. Topics may include learning mouse/keyboard/touch screen skills, Windows 7 & 8, internet, e-mail, MCSL catalogue and downloadable books, various software, folders and documents, and saving and printing. There are no skill prerequisites. Class size is limited. Registration is required.


Computer Basics Level 1 or Senior Moments Level 1 (6 Weeks)
Six Weeks - Early beginner: No skills needed
This class is intended for those who have very limited or no knowledge of computers. Participants will gain a basic knowledge of Hardware and Software, Intro to Windows, WordPad, Files & Folders-Toolbars, Create, Edit and Save a document, Exploring the Internet-Web pages (such as MCLS Home page and catalog), Email, Change your homepage. There will be hands-on exercises, along with group projects to reinforce skills. Class size is limited. Registration is required.


Computer Basics Level 2 or Senior Moments Level 2 (6 Weeks)
Six Weeks - Beginner: Some Mouse and Typing skills helpful
This class builds on Computer Basics 1/Senior Moments 1 course. Participants will review basic skills such as: how to use a mouse, build typing skills, computer vocabulary, making personal adjustments, using the software program Paint, work with files, folders and shortcuts, WordPad project, save to a CD, searching Internet (MCLS and Moodle training site) and using security features, and more on email. Class size is limited.  Registration is required.


Computer Basics Level 3 or Senior Moments Level 3 (6 Weeks)
This course will include a variety of topics for home computer users to develop their skills. Topics are: More on Email, Computer Security, Computer Maintenance, Photo Editing, MCLS Catalog and Downloading books, and Facebook and topics requested by class participants. Prerequisite for this course is at least a Level 1 Computer Basics or Senior Moments.  For the email class you will need to have an active email account before the class. Class size is limited.  Registration is required.


Computer Management Projects (3 Weeks)
(Maintenance, Safety/Networking, Accessory Folder in All Programs Menu)
Some mouse, typing and navigational skills are needed for this three week course. Participants will learn how to clean the desktop, disk and defragment, some easy steps to keep their computer safe, basic networking, and try some of the programs in the Accessory Folder in their computer. Class size is limited. Registration is required.


Creating with Publisher (Microsoft Publisher)
Familiarity with Word processing is helpful for this class. Mouse skills and some typing skills are needed as well. We will explore the types of publications that can be designed on Microsoft Publisher and create documents and creative projects from both a blank document and a template. Class size is limited. Registration is required.


Digital Photography
Are you unsure of how to get your pictures to the computer and then what to do with them after that? Learn how to edit and save your pictures and get some ideas of what can be done with them. Bring camera and/or saved pictures to class. Prerequisite: Basic mouse skills. Class size is limited. Registration is required.


Digital Scrapbooking Online
In this hands-on class we will be exploring different websites that allow you to upload your digital pictures and then create different projects with those pictures. We will also look at a few software programs that allow you to create digital scrapbook pages that you can print yourself or have printed at various area photo quick labs. Bring your favorite sites with you to class to share with others. You may bring your camera (with cord to connect to the computer), media card or other removable storage device with you to the class if you want to upload some of your own pictures to work with. Class size is limited. Registration is required.


E-reader Drop-in Session
Would you like to learn how to download free eBooks to your new Nook, Kindle, i-Pad, Smartphone, tablet, or other device using the library’s downloadable service?
During the Drop-In Session, you will learn about the Woodland’s Downloadable Library, how to download the necessary app or software, how to Browse, Checkout, and Download to your device, and how to navigate to the eBook once it is downloaded.
Please bring along any cords or cables that may be needed to attach the device to a computer.
When registering, please include in the note field the device you will be bringing.

Everything E-reader
Do you have a new Nook, Kindle, i-Pad or other e-Reader? Come to this class to learn about free e-books available from the Library System. Staff will provide a demonstration of the downloadable service and give some tips on using this service. A question and answer session will follow the presentation. Registration is requested but not required.

This series will cover the fundamentals of Excel, editing a workbook, formatting worksheets, creating and working with charts, managing workbooks, functions, formulas, lists automating tasks, macros, working with other programs and internet, data analysis and pivot tables and charts.

Intermediate-Advanced Microsoft Office PowerPoint (6 Weeks)
This series will cover the fundamentals of PowerPoint, editing and formatting a presentation, drawing and working with graphics, working with tables and WordArt, graphs and organization charts, delivering presentation, working with multimedia and the internet.
Basic PowerPoint is a prerequisite. Class size is limited. Registration is required.


Intermediate-Advanced Microsoft Office Word (6Weeks)
This series will cover the fundamentals of Word, editing text, formatting characters and paragraphs, formatting pages, working with tables, templates and styles, graphics, mail merge, document collaboration, outlines and long documents, WordArt and charts, working with other programs, forms, create web pages.

Intro to MCLS Online Databases
Come to this class to learn about the wonderful variety of research tools available online through the Monroe County Library System. We will review the types of information available in each database and learn the basics of searching for different types of information. The majority of these online tools are available to Monroe County residents at home. Class size is limited. Registration is required.


Introduction to Spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel)
We will examine the uses of spreadsheets, build and format tables and charts using many tools and functions of Excel.  Prerequisite: Basic mouse skills. Class size is limited. Registration is required.


Job Hunting Online & Resume
Find out where to go to look for jobs on the Internet. You will be able to create a resume online and discover other great career search tools. Leave this class with basic understanding of Microsoft Word and how to create a professional resume saved to a CD. We will cover types of resumes and resume formatting, so bring your resume information with you. You must have some mouse, typing, and Internet skills. Class size is limited. Keeping Your Computer Safe
If you are tired of those unwanted pop-ups and worried about computer viruses then this class might be worth your while. We will discuss the latest security methods and how to keep your computer protected and fully updated. Prerequisite: Basic Internet Knowledge. Class size is limited. Registration is required.


MCLS Projects - (Encore, Overdrive, Databases)
Some mouse, typing and navigational skills are needed for this three week course. Participants will learn how to use the library catalog, view and use their personal library account, downloadable books, and check out some of our databases for research and entertainment. Prerequisite: Basic Internet Knowledge. Class size is limited. Registration is required.


Microsoft Office Basics (4 Weeks)
This series in which you will learn the basics of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The first two weeks will focus on Word and will include creating, saving, editing and printing a basic document, inserting clip art or pictures to a document, and using some of the cool tools available in Word. In class three you will be introduced to Excel and will learn the basics of creating and formatting a table, create a chart, saving and printing. Week four will introduce you to PowerPoint where you will learn how to create a presentation using text, pictures, video, music and slide show settings. Class size is limited. Registration is required.


Computer Help Forum
These sessions are designed to help you whether you are a new computer user, working on a project and need help, or want to learn more about computer concepts to improve your skills: office software, internet skills, email, shopping online, social networking, security issues and more. Bring your topics of question with you. Register and bring your own laptop or use our computers to get answers to your questions. Registered participants will have priority over drop-ins.


1-on-1 Computer Help
This is an open computer forum where attendees are invited to hone their skills, ask questions, and learn something new about technology. You are welcome to bring your own laptops or other devices you want some help with. Mini topics will be discussed each month if time allows.


Online Research Assistance for Students
Need help finding the right resources for your homework or term paper? Internet searching not turning up what you need? Come learn about some of the great databases available FREE through the MCLS homepage including Biography Resource Center, Culturegrams, Infotrac Onefile, Learn-A-Test, and Opposing Viewpoints. Class size is limited. Registration is required.


Presentations with PowerPoint (Microsoft PowerPoint)
We will create and format a slide show using pictures, text, music, video and apply animations and slide show settings to the presentation. Prerequisite: Knowledge of word processing and mouse skills. Class size is limited. Registration is required.


Quicken
This is a one-on-one learning session. In this course participants will learn how to put their check book and, savings and loan accounts, into the Quicken software. Learn steps to track all entries for personal, business, IRS and any other category needed. Also, how to make detailed reports and charts, print reports, save to Excel, and save all data. Appointments must be made in advance by contacting the Reference department at Bedford or Ellis branch libraries.


SkyDrive
Access your documents from anywhere with multiple devices. Uses free email and internet storage. You will set up a SkyDrive account, learn to upload, view and edit your documents with Office Web apps, photos, email, contacts, calendars, and folders. Basic computer skills are helpful. Social Networking Projects- Facebook, Twitter, Skype and Internet Etiquette (3weeks)
In these sessions you will open accounts, learn to use tools, navigate the sites and internet etiquette concepts will be discussed. You will need an email account set up prior to the course start date. Basic computer skills are helpful. Class size is limited. Registration required.


Windows 8 (3Weeks)
In this comprehensive class you will have hands-on training on a variety of topics on the Start Screen that include Tile Management, Charms, Personalization, Apps, Email and Internet. On the Desktop you will learn about Task bar Options, Internet, Folders, and Side-by-Side Windows. Click, drag and swipe features will also be learned on both Start Screen and Desktop. Basic computer skills are helpful. Class size is limited. Registration required.


Word Basics (Microsoft Office)
This class is designed for those who have a computer but are still novices. We will examine how to use Microsoft Word, use the various tools, and save and print documents.
